3 Ways Designers Maximized The Power Of Rosco’s Compact Braq Cube® 4C

Lighting designers are always on the lookout for lighting fixtures that offer both versatility and efficiency, and Rosco Braq Cube 4C has become a favorite for exactly these reasons. The fixture's compact, 5” x 5” x 5.3” (127mm x 127mm x 135mm) form factor is not just about saving space, it opens opportunities to integrate the lighting fixture into complex designs. In this blog, we will dive into why the compact design of Braq Cube has captivated lighting professionals as we explore how its small size and powerful output can facilitate creative flexibility to enhance virtually any lighting design.

Powerful RGBW Footlights For Stage Productions

Footlights have been a key aspect of stage lighting since the 17th century. Their typical purpose is to eliminate harsh shadows caused by other stage lighting. However, the footlights for the hit Broadway production of Hadestown are used to intentionally create shadows! Lighting Designer Bradley King used Rosco Braq Cube 4C units to replicate “enormous shadows of the cast onto the set” that were previously cast using VL1000s in a prior venue.

Bradley sought out an RGBW fixture that was compact enough to fit in the existing foot trough, yet punchy enough to project shadows through a powerful rig. Bradley noted, “I found the Braq 4C was able to provide me the extra power I needed to compete with our high-wattage moving lights and par blinders, but small enough to fit in our VERY constrained apron position.”

Unique Stage Lighting Specials

A “special” in stage lighting refers to a designated lighting fixture or effect used for a specific purpose or moment in the production. For 59E59’s production of On That Day In Amsterdam, Lighting Designer Cha See used Braq Cube 4C units as specials to light the space between an upstage and downstage scrim.

The Braq Cubes were easily tucked away and used to light the space between the scrims that each had video content projected onto them. Cha made a snoot for each Braq Cube with Rosco Blackwrap to control the light spill and keep their output hidden from the audience’s view. Cha recalled, “It gave me a nice, beautiful wash on stage and having the audience not see the source made their effect even more successful.”

Eye-Catching Exhibit Lighting

When it comes to lighting exhibits, it is important that the work of art or item of interest is the focus of the visitor - not the lights illuminating the exhibit. To achieve this, the light source must blend into the surroundings and essentially be out of sight, out of mind. Such was the case when Lighting Designer Jonathan Talley chose Rosco Braq Cube 4C fixtures to light Stan – a 40-foot-long Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton that was auctioned off by Christie’s Auction House.

The fixtures needed to be small enough to fit into the base that was constructed to hold the T-rex, but also needed to have a high-quality output with crisp, clean colors. The Braq Cubes filled both of those requirements, and Jonathan noted “the form factor was perfect, and we loved the punch of these fixtures – they produce great colors.”

The compact form factor and powerful output of  Rosco's Braq Cube 4C has proven to be a game-changer for lighting designers across various applications. By integrating these fixtures into their designs, lighting professionals can enhance the visual impact of their project without focus being pulled by the light source itself.
