Bad Elster, one of the oldest spa towns in Germany, shines with new light. The design concept, conceived by Studio Ulrike R. Birnbaum, highlights the beauty of the town’s historic parks and sophisticated spa architecture with sustainable lighting solutions. The permanent installation incorporates numerous Rosco Image Spot® gobo projections that guide visitors through the parks, encouraging engagement and exploration.
A total of 2,633 LED fixtures illuminate the key features of the 50-hectare valley, including sculptures, fountains, rivers and façades. Pathways are not lit conventionally but are enhanced with lively lighting accents and gobo projections that tell the story of Bad Elster.

Ulrike R. Birnbaum, founder of the Studio Ulrike R. Birnbaum, said: “For this project, we used 16 Rosco Image Spot IP65 gobo projectors to guide visitors through the park. The projections are primarily directed onto the ground, creating a stunning effect that beautifully complements the overall lighting design.”
The gobo artwork, featuring text and colourful images of water, fish and flowers, was turned into custom glass gobos by Rosco’s gobo production team. The imagery was keystone-corrected to ensure perfect projection of the gobos onto the walkway.
The new lighting design celebrates and honours the rich cultural heritage of the area. As described on the Darc Awards website, “the result enables the historic parks of Bad Elster to retell their ancient royal history in an overarching interplay of light, nature, architecture, innovation, sustainability, and aesthetics.”

If you find yourself in the area, don’t miss the chance to take an evening walk through Bad Elster and explore the town’s history and culture through this immersive light installation.
