A CHRISTMAS CAROL DESIGN PALETTES
Color suggestions provided by Scenic Artist Bridgette Dennett
Find the right combination of Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, and Raw Umber to paint the wooden interiors of Scrooge’s house. Then use the shadowy Raw Umber, Purple, Van Dyke Brown, and Payne’s Grey to add layers of grunge, shade, and an overall moody edge to the set.
You can also use thinned out washes of the Purple and Paynes Grey to create interesting cool toned shading and dimension for any snowbanks you’ve got on set.
PRO TIP
Mix the paints inside Rosco's Earth & Wood Scenic Set to experiment with different natural wood tones for your set design.
Coating suggestions provided by Scenic Artist Bridgette Dennett
If you choose to carve snowbanks out of foam, then use Rosco FoamCoat to protect the carving and prime the foam for paint.
You can also strengthen and prime your foam snowbanks by dipping strips of muslin in Rosco FlexBond, then applying them papier mache-style to the foam.
From fake slabs of beef, to fake harvest vegetables, to delicious-looking fake desserts – you can carve all sorts of a faux food out of foam for Fezziwig’s Christmas festivities, and then use Rosco Scenic Coatings to protect those props and make them look more realistic. More details here – and also here.

A Modern Haunted Effect With A Vintage Touch
Transform a TV/monitor into a haunted portrait of Jacob Marley with this clever "brush stroke" technique.
Color suggestions provided by Lighting Designer Darius Evans
E708, R365, R08 – These colors are for the cold and empty world of London before Scrooge is visited by the ghosts.
R54, R09, R371 – These colors represent Christmas with more life, after Scrooge changes his ways.
The remaining colors can be combined with gobos to create effects for the Ghosts. See the Gobo Palette section below for more details.
Gobo suggestions provided by Lighting Designer Darius Evans
Project the 78790 Vined Fence + R370 Italian Blue onto the stage when Marley arrives.
Combine the R81210 New Raylines gobo with R09 Golden Amber to project warm rays of light onto the stage for the Ghost of Christmas Past.
Project a feeling of voyeurism on stage for the Ghost of Christmas Present by projecting R77279 Industrial Window gobos on stage in a cool/sterile color like R64 or R361.
Use contrasting, warm & cool breakup gobos to create an ominous setting for the Ghost of Christmas Future. Combine G598 Small Squares gobos with warm R09 and project it outward onto the set and into the house. This will contrast with the G598 gobos combined with the cool R361 projecting inward to wash the stage and create a haunting scene.
