Blue hour is the period of twilight when the sun is below the horizon and the sky takes on a deep, vivid blue tone. Capturing this distinctive atmosphere can be difficult, especially when production constraints make shooting at dusk impractical. Cinematographer [Fizzy - Philipp Rode](https://fizzy.vision/) faced this challenge while working on the short film Swallow Me Home in Iceland's northern fjords. Below, he explains how [Rosco WindowCling filters](https://www.rosco.com/product/windowcling) helped him create a blue hour look during the day for one of the film's key scenes.

## Capturing the mood of blue hour

From early prep, we knew that time and budget would limit our ability to shoot during blue hour or in darker conditions, which Iceland’s long daylight hours can make challenging even in September. For this church scene, our goal was to capture the mood of blue hour while still showcasing the beauty of the exterior landscape.

[![A church surrounded by green fields in Iceland, used as a filming location for the short film Swallow Me Home.](https://spectrum.rosco.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Brandfolder%20Assets/Brandfolder/Rosco%20blog%20WindowCling%20Iceland%20House%20IMG_5150%20copy.jpg?width=1200&height=900&name=Rosco%20blog%20WindowCling%20Iceland%20House%20IMG_5150%20copy.jpg)](https://spectrum.rosco.com/hubfs/Brandfolder%20Assets/Brandfolder/Rosco%20blog%20WindowCling%20Iceland%20House%20IMG_5150%20copy.jpg?hsLang=en)

We wanted to give the image depth, with a strong contrast between the dark foreground and the softly lit exterior. To achieve that, we needed to reduce the window exposure by approximately 4 to 6 stops. Inside the church, we raised the base exposure and added key and backlight to create separation and texture without flattening the image.

## Why Rosco WindowCling

We selected Rosco WindowCling filters for both practical and creative reasons. At this location, we weren’t allowed to attach anything to the windows with tape, and the strong Icelandic winds made it impossible to use traditional ND or diffusion foils on the outside. WindowCling, designed to quickly attach to windowpanes using static electricity, was the perfect solution. We could apply it directly to the interior side of the glass without glue or tape. Plus, we were able to layer the filters if the Icelandic weather conditions changed.

<iframe width="256" height="145" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/iTEluWcXo9k?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen title="2109026 SMH BTS ROSCO" style="position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 100%; height: 100%; border-width: medium; border-style: none; border-color: currentcolor; border-image: none;"></iframe>

We combined WindowCling ND with the WindowCling Day For Night (D/N) layer, stacking the D/N on top of the ND. We had hoped for overcast skies, but as is typical in Iceland, we ended up with something different: bright sunlight. The location, a church surrounded by an open grassy field, caused significant green spill into the interior. The D/N layer helped us control that, reducing the overall window exposure by about 2.5 stops and adding a subtle steel-blue tone, perfect for our blue hour look. WindowCling filters enabled us to achieve the desired results in-camera, reducing the need for post-production adjustments.

## Performance and reliability

WindowCling performed very well. The material was quick to install, optically clean, and stayed perfectly in place throughout the entire shoot. It provided consistent density without any unwanted reflections or color shifts, making it a very reliable tool under fast-changing conditions. It gave us the control we needed to stay true to our creative intent and maintain the mood of the scene throughout the shoot. Overall, WindowCling was an important part of our toolkit!
