Hakkasan is a Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant group that opened in London before expanding to other cities across the globe. All Hakkasan restaurants exhibit stylish décor with traditional Chinese motifs that have become synonymous with the brand. Lighting designers have also used a combination of subtle illumination with dynamic water effect projections from Rosco's X-Effects projectors to enhance the Hakkasan dining experience.
Firefly Point of View (FPOV) designed the original Hakkasan in London's Hanway Place. One of the distinctive features of this location is the 16m dark stone wall behind the bar that is immersed in a reflected water effect created by Rosco X-Effects fixtures.
Peter Veale, Design Director at FPOV, explained that “the original concept was to bring a basic element (water) to the interior design, and also to create a lively, animated look to the back bar, used only in the evening to give a night club feel.” With that in mind, Peter and his team specified Rosco X-Effects fixtures to create the water effect behind the bar. Peter also noted that the X-Effects was the perfect fixture for this application because “it blends with the black mesh ceilings used in all the Hakkasan locations."
The FPOV designers that worked on the original lighting design became part of the team that took the Hakkasan brand around the world. Following the successful launch of the Hanway Place location, the Hakkasan group opened new locations in major cities, including Miami, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Doha. X-Effects are installed inside each of these locations to create the same elemental water effect behind the bar. The Hakkasan Group also opened their second London location - Hakkasan Mayfair - which features a water effect from the X-Effects cascading down the stairs into the lower-level dining room.
X-Effects projectors were also installed inside the Hakkasan location at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The site, featuring a restaurant, lounge, and nightclub, was designed by Isometrix Lighting + Design. They specified X-Effects projectors that were installed in different locations across the venue to project water effects on the walls and staircase.
