Westminster Bridge Road in London was recently improved for pedestrians and other users alike. As part of a Lambeth Council project, PWLC Projects was commissioned to revamp four historic rail underpasses within the Vauxhall and Waterloo districts. As a result, the Westminster Bridge Road tunnel was given a new light that is endowed with a narrative that reflects the local character.
The lighting design, created by Michael Grubb Studio, features 54 Rosco Image Spot LED projectors, which enhance the space with numerous gobo projections that were co-designed with the community.
Michael Grubb Studio worked together with the architectural and design studio make:good to produce a series of Rosco Black and White Custom Glass Gobos that would reflect the area’s local history and identity. The artwork, developed through a collaborative effort involving schools and community groups, drew inspiration from historical maps and iconic local landmarks.
The compact and powerful, IP65-rated Image Spot LED gobo projectors were affixed to mounting fixtures that were designed by PWLC Projects and installed on the tunnel ceiling to project crisp and bright imagery onto the abutment wall and pavement. Sturdy and easy to maintain, the Image Spot fixtures provided an energy efficient, durable and flexible lighting solution for one of the busiest roads in London.
Michael Grubb Studio commented on their website: “Architectural and theatrical lighting helped fuse impact and drama. Bespoke lighting solutions were in place to allow highway lighting to be integrated without any long-term maintenance issues.”
