5 Ways To Use The New RoscoGrip™ Strips

There’s a new way to control non-dimmable lights – RoscoGrip Strips. These 6-inch-wide (15cm) rolls of sticky-backed neutral density filter are an excellent solution for lowering the brightness of practically any non-dimmable fixture. Below are five examples of ways to put RoscoGrip Strips to work in your venue or on your next project.

Make Office Lights Less Bright

Whether you’re a filmmaker on location, or an architectural lighting designer needing to make a correction on site – sometimes there are lights in an office setting that are just too bright. One RoscoGrip Strip will dim the light down to 25% transmission, but if that’s not enough, just stick on another piece.

Note: Like any plastic lighting filter, it is not recommended to use RoscoGrip Strips for long-term installation on T5 & T8 fluorescent bulbs. Those particular fluorescent bulbs generate a decent amount of ultraviolet energy, and the UV is especially concentrated right at the glass of the bulb. This will cause the ND to fade quickly. It’s fine for use in temporary installations, however, and this does not apply to most LED tubes because they, typically, do not generate the same UV that fluorescent tubes do.

Lighting Hack: Dim Down LED Strip Lights Without A Dimmer

There are plenty of ways to dim down LED strips – but most of them involve buying and wiring extra components and controllers. If you have an LED strip you’re happy with – but you just want it to be 25% dimmer – then abandon the extra components and wiring and stick on some RoscoGrip Strip instead.

Note: Make sure to use RoscoGrip Strips on LED tape that is installed inside an LED Profile or LED Tape Channel with some sort of cover. It is not recommended to install RoscoGrip Strips – or any other plastic lighting filter, for that matter – directly onto the emitters of LED strips. When placed directly onto the emitters, the photons literally force the dyestuffs right off the plastic. There needs to be a little distance between the LEDs and the filter – even just a millimeter or two will usually do the trick.

Keep Headlights & Emergency Lights From Blowing Out The Shot

If you’ve ever shot a night exterior film/video project with vehicles on set, then you have probably experienced the intense flare of headlights or noticed that the red & blue emergency vehicle lights are so intense that they’ve lost all of their color and they’re just bright white flashing lights in your shot.

Until now, there has been no easy way to dim those vehicle lights down – but RoscoGrip Strips makes it simple. Just peel back the release liner, apply the RoscoGrip to the lights, and then trim it to fit. The RoscoGrip Strips feature a medium-tack adhesive that allows you to reposition the filter as you apply and quickly remove it when the job is done.

Whether it’s a neon sign that’s too bright on set or a pesky Exit sign that’s pulling too much attention in the background of your shot – you can use RoscoGrip Strips to dim those signs down.

This clip is from our friends at Filmtools showing off how they used RoscoGrip Strips to control the brightness of the signage inside their store. Not only are the signs less bright, but note how much more vibrant the signage colors are!

Disclaimer: make sure to check your local laws and regulations regarding making alterations to Exit signs before applying RoscoGrip Strips to any Exit signs in your venue/location.

Reduce The Brightness Of Music Stand Lights Without A Dimmer

How many times has the lighting glow from the orchestra pit spoiled the effect of the lighting on stage? Even if the music stands have a dimmer, they are oftentimes still too bright even when set to their lowest level. Now you can dim down the brightness of your music stand lights with RoscoGrip Strips. They’re perfect for sticking onto cool-running LED music stand lights.

You can also use RoscoGrip Strips to dim down your non-dimmable backstage running lights to keep your blues from creeping on stage from the wings and contaminating your stage lighting. This same technique can be used to dim aisle or step lights that are too bright out in the house as well.
