The DMG MINI combines high-quality light output and precise color control in a compact, lightweight design, offering filmmakers and photographers endless creative possibilities. Florence-based director and cinematographer Julien Vannucchi is well acquainted with the versatility of the DMG MINI, having used it across a wide range of projects—from commercials and documentaries to studio photography. Below, he shares his experience shooting with the DMG MINI.
I must say I have been genuinely impressed by the performance and build quality of the DMG MINI. Thanks to Rosco’s MIX® technology and its RGBALW diode array, the DMG MINI is undoubtedly one of the finest LED panels I’ve ever used. The fixture is a powerhouse of versatility: compact yet capable of delivering exceptional lighting across diverse scenarios. Whether for commercial shoots, studio product photography, films, or documentaries, this little light finds countless applications. Here are five creative ways I’ve used the DMG MINI to elevate my productions:
In fast-paced commercial shoots, mobility is essential. The DMG MINI’s lightweight design makes it perfect for handheld operation, enabling quick adjustments between takes. I used it as a hair light or subtle fill—particularly effective on overcast days, but also useful for shooting in shadow areas during sunny days.
For this commercial, I mounted the DMG MINI on a small Cardellini clamp attached to gym bars, using it as a subtle background accent. I also used it handheld as a fill light to soften shadows on the subject and as a wash light to illuminate the background with a soft glow. Paired with a stronger key light, it proved extremely effective at shaping the scene without overpowering it.
Documentaries often demand discreet, controlled lighting. On this shoot, the DMG MINI with the DoP Choice SNAPGRID® Accessory minimized spill in tight spaces, while the precise color temperature control enabled us to relight subjects naturally.
The CAPTURE feature in Rosco’s myMIX® app allowed us to select a color from a photo and replicate it accurately with the DMG MINI. The SNAPGRID focused light non-invasively, and remote management via the free myMIX app was invaluable on location.
In cramped locations like this van, full lighting kits are impractical unless mounted on a low rider. The DMG MINI’s compact size and battery option were invaluable on this run-and-gun documentary shoot. Mounted on an extended arm clamped inside the vehicle, its small footprint allowed concealment on the roof lining—exactly what we needed.
High CRI ensured accurate skin tones, and the flat diffuser delivered beautiful, soft light. It adapted seamlessly throughout the day with its massive color temperature range (1,700K–10,000K).
The DMG MINI excels in product photography. For this bottle shoot, I deployed the fixture as a colored backlight (its GEL mode is fantastic here, with 130 presets!) to create rich, deep hues—complete with detailed SAT control and ± Magenta/Green adjustments. The DMG MINI also served as the perfect key light thanks to its ideal size and diffusion!
The DMG MINI is more than a portable light: it’s a creative Swiss Army Knife for filmmakers and photographers. A must-have for anyone looking to step up their lighting game!
